In his encyclical Ut Unum Sint, Pope John Paul II identified the petrine office as an especial hindrance to Christian unity, and he expressly requested ecumenical dialogue on papal service. Accordingly, from 2003 to 2009, a Lutheran-Catholic dialogue group met at the Farfa cloister near Rome to discuss this very topic. The group was comprised of seven Catholic and seven Lutheran theologians from Germany, France, Italy, and Scandinavia. In 2010 the resulting report was published as Gemeinschaft der Kirchen und Petrusamt. Lutherisch-katholische Annäherungen [The Communion of Churches and the Petrine Office: Lutheran-Catholic Convergences] (Frankfurt am Main: Lembeck, 2010).
